The Impossible Encounter dreamed of by dozens of generations of “25 readers,” who are finally face-to-face with the characters shaped by Alessandro Manzoni in the masterpiece-novel “I Promessi Sposi,” is made possible by the expressiveness of wood: the 12 faces of the characters, as they would appear to us today, take on substance in the material of inlaid wood.
The digital prints of the faces are made on the surface of fine inlays, one-of-a-kind pieces specially designed and created by the hands of master inlayer Mario Moriggi: fine TABU woods, of certified forestry origin and dyed with state-of-the-art technology, such as Eucalyptus Frisé, Oak, Tay, Maple Frisé, Ash Burl, Birch, Larch, and multilaminar veneers are used.
It creates a highly refined “play” of overlapping planes readable in transparency, almost Leonardesque: the faces sinking into the wood and the three-dimensional design of the wood emerging through the faces.
